ATHENS — A team of marine archaeologists from the University of Athens announced Friday the discovery of an ancient city on the floor of the Ionian Sea, approximately 12 kilometers off the coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos, at a depth of 38 meters. The site, which researchers have provisionally named Kallipolis after the ancient Greek ideal of the "beautiful city," contains remarkably preserved stone streets, a colonnaded public square, at least a dozen intact building foundations, and thousands of ceramic artifacts. Preliminary dating based on pottery styles and stratigraphic analysis places the settlement in the late Bronze Age, roughly 1,000 to 1,100 BCE.

The discovery was made last summer by a research team using side-scan sonar during a survey of the seabed for unrelated geological purposes. The sonar images revealed regular geometric patterns inconsistent with natural rock formations — the telltale signature of human construction. Divers sent to investigate returned with video footage that stunned the scientific community when it was shared with reviewers ahead of Friday's formal announcement. "I have been doing underwater archaeology for thirty years," said project director Dr. Nikos Stavros. "I have never seen anything preserved at this level. It is as if the city went to sleep."

The preservation is attributed to the specific conditions of the site: the city appears to have been submerged rapidly — likely in a matter of hours — during a catastrophic seismic event, and then buried under a thin layer of fine sediment that protected it from the destructive forces of wave action and oxygen exposure. The Ionian Sea is one of the most seismically active regions in Europe; the ancient geographer Strabo wrote of cities along this coastline disappearing beneath the sea, passages that modern scholars had largely interpreted as legend. "Strabo may have been a journalist, not a mythmaker," said Dr. Stavros.

Among the most significant finds is what appears to be a public building of substantial size — possibly a civic hall or temple — with carved limestone columns still standing upright, their capitals intact. Inside, divers recovered bronze vessels, ivory fragments, and a clay tablet inscribed with Linear B script, the ancient form of Greek used by Mycenaean administrators. Linear B tablets have been found at several Bronze Age sites on land, but this is the first time they have been recovered from an underwater context. Experts say the tablets, once cleaned and analyzed, could contain administrative records, inventories, or ritual texts that shed significant light on late Bronze Age society.

The Greek Ministry of Culture has declared the site a protected archaeological zone and dispatched a naval vessel to enforce exclusion boundaries around the coordinates. International interest is intense: research teams from France, Germany, the United States, and Japan have already contacted the University of Athens requesting collaboration agreements. The ministry has indicated it will oversee a structured international consortium rather than allow competing excavations, citing the fragility of the site and the lessons learned from past underwater digs disrupted by commercial salvagers.

Funding for the initial survey was relatively modest — approximately 2.3 million euros provided by the European Research Council. The full excavation program now planned will require dramatically more resources, with early estimates ranging from 40 to 80 million euros over a decade-long project. Several technology companies with marine robotics divisions have expressed interest in providing equipment in exchange for access to research data. Dr. Stavros said he expects formal excavation to begin within 18 months, pending the completion of a comprehensive 3D mapping survey using autonomous underwater vehicles.
